About this pastoral study project

How can attachment theory be applied to biblical theology for the sake of healthier and more vital relationships in the church?

Much has been gained by pastors from the study of family systems theory—both in pastoral care and congregational leadership, such as through the work of Edwin Friedman and Peter Steinke. Recently the attachment theory of John Bowlby has been having a similar impact on the world of marriage and family therapy, as evidenced by the highly successful “Emotionally Focused Therapy--EFT” developed by Sue Johnson. This approach, however, has yet to be significantly applied to the study of scripture and theology. In today’s divisive and anxiety-laden culture, the church needs all the tools it can get to stay “attached” and grounded in love for God and one another.

I plan on studying attachment theory and biblical theology through books, journal articles, trainings, and conversations with experts in the field, while reflecting intentionally on scripture through regular blog posts. I will then discuss my findings with congregational consultants and gather my reflections into an electronic book or curriculum aimed at explaining and strengthening attachment bonds through scripture.
