Transforming Ministry in a Time of Transition

Wayne E. Oates Institute

Summary

The first phase of the Transforming Ministry in a Time of Transition project tackles the challenges currently facing congregations and congregational leadership by providing a two-week distance learning opportunity for at least 300 congregational leaders. These congregational leaders will include pastors, educators, pastoral counselors, chaplains, age-specific ministers, and lay leadership from all aspects of congregational life.

Utilization of the Internet will provide a nationally accessible platform for 25 recognized leaders to serve as presenters qualified to articulate current societal needs within and outside the church. These presenters will focus on how the church of the 21u Century can effectively minister in a time of technological change and successful congregational models will be provided. In addition to the 25 presentations in the form of text, audio, and video, there will be interaction between presenters and participants through Live Discussions, Email Discussion Groups, and Discussion Forums.

The second phase of this proposal is to identify and facilitate one or more task groups following the two weeks of online presentations and interaction. They will focus on the expressed needs, ideas, concepts, and models evolving from the online educational experience and will then organize and analyze this material which will serve as a catalyst for a report or paper to be published.
